The wider interval helps when a person may have left ECCF on a Friday, weekend, holiday, or an uncertain date. It does not cure source lag. Do not assume every field sits on one sheet. Essex research identifies a booking record, chronological custody history, authorization, discharge sheet, and destination as possible separate records. Request them by name and prefer electronic delivery.
Essex Weekend Release Checks
No official Essex weekend or holiday release rule was verified. Do not shift a calculated date or assume that a court order was carried out early. Operational processing, another warrant, a detainer, or a receiving agency can affect the physical custody event.
A court order explains legal authority, but the ECCF record supplies the actual custody-exit time. VINE can add timely notice, yet it may lag. When a weekend spans the requested range, state the full interval in the OPRA request, including midnight at the start and 11:59 p.m. at the end. Essex Release Destination Checks

Older events rely more on agency and court archives. A miss can reflect an alias, data lag, expungement, a paper record, or a short municipal detention. Unofficial booking sites are not substitutes for the absent Essex feed.

Electronic criminal case jackets have limits. They may omit discovery, complaints, presentence reports, older paper filings, and some items filed outside eCourts. A court order should be paired with the ECCF custody entry because another warrant, case, sentence, or detainer can delay community release.
Probation in a judgment means court supervision in the community. A state-prison commitment points to the NJDOC lane instead. The case record supplies the legal basis, while the custody record supplies the physical event and the destination field.
Write an Essex Three-Day Request
A strong request asks for identifiable existing records rather than “all releases.” State the facility and exact date range. Request the booking or intake record, chronological custody-status entries, release or discharge authorization, actual release date and time, release code, and destination or receiving agency. Ask for nonexempt portions if part of a record is withheld.
OPRA does not require a custodian to answer why someone was released or to create a new spreadsheet. If the county does not keep a compiled 72-hour list, responsive daily logs or individual entries may still exist. For one person, add the full name, date of birth or booking number if known, and approximate booking date. Electronic delivery avoids needless copy charges.
A partial response may need a narrow follow-up. A release sheet without destination confirms that ECCF custody ended but not community release. A transfer entry without receiving-agency confirmation proves only the sending side. Ask for the missing existing record rather than resubmitting an unrestricted request.
Essex County accepts requests through its online portal, email, fax, mail, and delivery to the Hall of Records. The County Clerk is not the county OPRA custodian. Ordinary state copy rates are five cents for letter-size pages and seven cents for legal-size pages, while electronic delivery is normally free. Actual media cost, delivery, or an extraordinary-service charge may apply. A deposit may be requested when estimated costs exceed five dollars.
OPRA generally calls for a response as soon as possible and within seven business days for a complete noncommercial request, subject to lawful extensions and exemptions. ICE and BOP have separate federal record routes. Choosing the correct custodian prevents a no-records response that only reflects agency boundaries.
When the three-day interval crosses a month end, a state Current Max Release Date may also have been recalculated.
